The Northern Cape Government has contracted the Rural Fisheries Programme (RFP) at Rhodes University to develop a small-scale commercial fishery at Vanderkloof Dam. The proposed fishery will make use of gillnets that will pose a threat to the Threatened Largemouth Yellowfish. SACRAA is part of the Advisory Group (AG) representing the National recreational interest and is fighting to prevent the use of gillnets. Recent developments support our initial contention that the use of gillnets for a commercial fishery are illegal. Read more.
VANDERKLOOF KRAAL FISHERY
The RFP has also been contracted by Northern Cape to develop the Kraal Fishery below the Vanderkloof Dam wall. At present the fishery operates illegally and SACRAA is a member of the Advisory Group (AG) that is attempting to legalize and regulate the fishery. Our concern is once again the by-catch of the Largemouth Yellowfish. Read more.
